The
Canisius College volleyball team rebounded from a first-set loss and defeated
Rider University in the Koessler Athletic Center on Saturday afternoon. The
Golden Griffins won 23-25, 25-20, 25-9 and 25-23 to improve to 8-11 overall and
3-5 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.
Senior
Danielle Brawn led Canisius with 16
kills while posting a .302 attack percentage. Freshman Olivia Chrzanowski had 11 kills for the Griffs while junior Allyson Severyn had 32 digs. Senior Janelle Davis had a double-double with
43 assists and 15 digs. Senior Samantha
Good added six blocks and sophomore Jessica
Warner added five blocks to the winning effort.
"We
gave away too many points in that first set and it took some time during the
second set to rectify those mistakes," Canisius coach Cathy Hummel said. "We focused on taking care of things on our side
of the net and played better in those last two sets."
Canisius
won six of the opening eight points and built a 14-9 first-set lead. The Broncs
used a 7-2 run to tie the set at 16-16 and used a 4-1 run later in the set to
take control and eventually win the opening set. Canisius committed a combined 15
errors in the opening set.
The
Griffs evened the match by taking the second set. Canisius once again took the
early lead, going up 8-3 after a Rider error. The Broncs battled back again,
taking a 12-11 lead after winning five consecutive points. Canisius broke open
the set by scoring five straight points, going up 22-17 on a service ace from
Severyn.
Canisius
won the first three points and never looked back in the third set. The Griffs
then used a 10-1 run, winning five points on the serve of Severyn and senior Joanna Burt to go up 17-5. Brawn had
five kills on 10 attempts in the set as Canisius hit .343 in the set.
The
teams stayed close throughout the fourth set and Rider went up 18-15 after a
kill from Kayla Wong. The Griffs then scored six of the next seven points to go
up 21-19. Rider tied the set at 22-22, but Canisius closed out the set,
including a service ace from Brawn and kill from Good, to win the match.
Wong
and Jaclyn Webber each had 10 kills for Rider (4-17, 2-7 MAAC)
Canisius
continues its five-match homestand on Sunday afternoon, when the Golden
Griffins host Loyola University. Game time in the Koessler Athletic Center is
set for 2 p.m.
Notes: Canisius
has won the last 10 meetings against Rider and 17 of the last 20 overall... Davis
had her fourth double-double of the season and 25th of her career.
The senior had her eighth 40-assist match of the season... Brawn had double-digit
kills for the 17th time this season... Severyn's 34 digs were one off
her career high of 35 set against Iona on Oct. 10, 2010... Good had four or more
blocks for the 32nd time in her career... The five blocks for Warner
were a career-high.
