Canisius
College women's basketball freshman Jen
Morabito (Binghamton, N.Y.) was named the MAAC Rookie of the Week on
Monday. Morabito wins the award for the second time this season and gives
Canisius the MAAC Rookie of the Week for the sixth time in eight weeks this
season.
Morabito
led Canisius with a 17.0 points per game average in two contests last week. The
freshman shot 50 percent from the field and was 8-for-13 (61.5 percent) from
behind the arc. Morabito made four 3-pointers in each game and also had five
assists on the week. The 5-foot-9 guard is the first freshman since Canisius
went to the Division I level to score 16 or more points in four straight games.
Morabito
also won the award on Dec. 20. The other Canisius freshmen to be named MAAC
Rookie of The Week this season are Courtney
VandeBovenkamp (Dec. 27), Jamie
Ruttle (Dec. 6 and Nov. 29) and Jen
Lennox (Nov. 22.).
Prior
to this season, Canisius never had more than two freshmen receive the weekly
honor in the same season. Also, the four Griffs to win the award set a new MAAC
record. The previous record was three, most recently accomplished by Manhattan
and Fairfield in 2004-05.
Canisius (4-8, 0-1 MAAC) concludes its
three-game homestand on Tuesday, when the Golden Griffins host Saint Peter's.
Game time at the Koessler Athletic Center is set for 7 p.m.
