Manhattan
broke open the game by scoring 25 consecutive points in the second half and
defeated the Cansius College women's basketball team 55-30 at the Koessler Athletic
Center on Friday. The Golden Griffins fall to 6-14 overall and 2-7 in the Metro
Atlantic Athletic Conference.
Freshman
Jamie Ruttle led Canisius with eight
points and nine rebounds while freshman Jen
Morabito had six points in 27 minutes off the bench for the Griffs. Junior Steph MacDonald had eight rebounds and
five points.
"We
worked on the 1-3-1 this week as Manhattan provides you with a different look
from other teams in our league. It took us a little bit of time to adjust to it in the first
half," Canisius coach Terry Zeh
said. "We made some shots to keep it close before halftime, but Manhattan was able to get open
looks in the second half and knocked those down."
Manhattan
(14-6, 6-3 MAAC) scored the first seven points of the game, making three of its
first four shots. The Griffs responded with a 5-0 run, making it 7-5 after
Ruttle split two free throws. The Lady Jaspers would push their lead to 19-9 with a
7-0 run, capped by back-to-back layups from Abby Wentworth. The Griffs closed
the half by scoring 10 of the 14 points in the final 10 minutes of the first
half. With a 9-0 run, including 3-pointers from Morabito and MacDonald, Canisius
cut the deficit to 19-18. A layup from Ruttle in the final minute sent Canisius
into the locker room down 23-20.
Layups
from freshman Courtney VandeBovenkamp
and Ruttle got Canisius within one at 25-24, but the Griffs wouldn't score
another field goal for more than 12 minutes. Manhattan scored 25 straight
points, pushing its lead to 53-25.
Wentworth
led Manhattan with 14 ponts and eight assists while Lindsey Loutsenhizer and
Nadia Peters each had 13 points. Peters had 11 rebounds to record a
double-double.
