Canisius
College women's basketball freshman Courtney
VandeBovenkamp (Amherstburg, Ontario) was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic
Conference Rookie of the Week on Monday. VandeBovenkamp wins the award for the
second time in the last four weeks, and a Canisius freshman has now won the
award seven times on the season.
VandeBovenkamp
averaged 6.7 points and 7.7 rebounds in three games last week to go along with
six assists. The 6-foot-1 forward scored eight points in two of the games,
shooting 40 percent overall and 50 percent from behind the arc. VandeBovenkamp
had 14 rebounds in the win over Siena, the most rebounds by a Canisius freshman
since Maggie Guidry had 16 rebounds twice during the 1996-97 season.
Other
Canisius freshmen to be named MAAC Rookie of The Week this season are Jen Morabito (Jan. 3 and Dec. 20), Jamie Ruttle (Dec. 6 and Nov. 29) and Jen Lennox (Nov. 22.).
Prior
to this season, Canisius never had more than two freshmen receive the weekly
honor in the same season. Also, the four Griffs to win the award set a new MAAC
record. The previous record was three, most recently accomplished by Manhattan
and Fairfield in 2004-05.
Canisius (6-11, 2-4 MAAC) plays two road games
this weekend, starting at Fairfield on Friday. Game time in Alumni Hall is set
for 7 p.m.
