AMHERST, N.Y. - The
Canisius College volleyball team lost 25-22, 25-23 and 25-18 to the University
at Buffalo at Alumni Arena on Wednesday night. The Golden Griffins are now 6-8
on the season.
Senior
Renee Lettow and sophomore Samantha Good led the team with seven
kills apiece. Junior Layne Adams and
Good each had three blocks. Junior Janelle
Davis led the team with 15 assists and seven digs.
"We
didn't carry over our quality of play from the two wins last weekend. That's
what disappoints me the most today," Canisius coach Cathy Hummel said. "It wasn't only the result of this match that
bothers me, but our energy and effort. We need to correct that in time for our
matches this weekend."
Buffalo
(12-4) jumped out of the gates early, winning the first two points and going up
by as many as six points at 13-7. The Griffs came back on an 8-1 run to take a
15-14 lead, getting two kills from Emily
Elek and three blocks during the run. Buffalo responded with a 6-1 run,
taking a 20-16 lead on a Canisius error. The Griffs would tie the match at
22-22 after a Buffalo error, but the Bulls won the final three points to close
out the set.
Canisius
held the lead for the first half of the second set, building a 16-12 lead on a
Buffalo attack error. The Griffs then committed four straight errors, letting
Buffalo take a 17-16 lead. The Bulls extended their lead to 22-18, but Canisius
won four straight points - getting a kill and service ace from Davis and two
kills from Good to tie the match at 22-22. The Bulls would win the next two
points, including a service ace off the tape to take a 24-22 lead. After a
Buffalo service error made it 24-23, the Bulls got a kill from Kristin Bignell
to take the second set and a 2-0 lead in the match.
Buffalo
won the first point and never relinquished the lead in the third set. The
Griffs would tie the set at 10-10 on a Buffalo error, but the Bulls responded
with three straight points to take a 13-10 lead and never let Canisius get
closer than two points the rest of the way.
Canisius
returns home for two matches this weekend at the Koessler Athletic Center. The
Golden Griffins take on Loyola on Saturday, and Rider on Sunday, with match
time set for 2 p.m. on each day.
