Sophomore
Emily Elek (Wescosville, Pa.) was
named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week on Monday.
Elek, who redshirted the 2009 season with a knee injury, is the second Golden
Griffin to win a weekly award this season as sophomore Samantha Good was named MAAC Offensive Player of the Week two times
this season.
In
two Canisius road victories last week, Elek averaged 4.43 kills per set and
1.14 blocks per set. Elek led Canisius in kills in both matches, posting 13
kills and a career-high five blocks in the three-set win at Siena on Saturday. Elek also
had a career-high 18 kills to go along with three blocks in the four set win at
Marist on Sunday. The Wescosville, Pa. native was a perfect 19-for-19 on service
receptions in the two matches while totaling eight digs.
Canisius
(6-7, 2-0 MAAC) plays three matches in Western New York this week, starting
with Wednesday's non-conference game at Buffalo. The Golden Griffins resume
conference play this weekend, hosting Loyola on Saturday, and Rider on Sunday.
