Volleyball Takes Down Marist in Four

Getting 10 kills from four players and battling back to win late in the third and fourth sets, the Canisius College volleyball team defeated Marist in four sets on Sunday, in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. The Golden Griffins won 25-20, 21-25, 25-21, 25-23 to improve to 6-7 overall and 2-0 in the MAAC.

Sophomore Emily Elek continued to pace the Canisius offense, recording 18 kills and three blocks. Senior Renee Lettow had 14 kills, and sophomore Samantha Good had 13 kills and two blocks. Junior Layne Adams added 10 kills and three blocks while junior Janelle Davis had 36 assists and sophomore Allyson Severyn had 19 digs.

"We got contributions from a lot of players today and that was able to keep us balanced," Canisius coach Cathy Hummel said. "We had a great weekend on the road in the conference, but it's only two matches. We need to stay hungry and bring this success and momentum back with us to Buffalo."

Canisius trailed 16-15 in the first set, before winning five straight points, including three service aces from junior Danielle Brawn, to go up 20-16. A kill from Lettow closed out the set.

After Marist (5-9, 0-2 MAAC) won the second set, the teams played two closely contested sets. Marist jumped out to a 7-2 lead and was up 13-7 before a 9-3 run by the Griffs tied the set at 16-16. The teams traded points and with the set tied at 21-21, Canisius won the final four points to win the set - getting a kill from Elek, a Marist attack error, block from Elek and Adams and a kill from Adams to win the set.

In the fourth set, Red Foxes held a 20-16 lead, but Canisius battled back to tie the set at 23-23. During the run, Canisius got kills from Good, Elek, and Adams to knot the set. After another kill from Adams, the Griffs used a block from Adams and Davis to close out the match.

Canisius returns to Western New York for three matches this week, starting with Wednesday's non-conference meeting at Buffalo.
