The
Canisius College volleyball team lost its final match in four sets in the Canisius/Niagara
Invitational in the Koessler Athletic Center on Saturday afternoon. Bucknell
defeated Canisius 25-22, 25-27, 25-19, 25-22 as the Golden Griffins fall to 4-7
on the season.
Junior
Layne Adams had nine kills and zero
errors on 16 attack attempts for a .562 attack percentage to go along with
three blocks in the match. Sophomore Emily
Elek had 15 kills while senior Renee
Lettow added 12 kills. Junior Janelle
Davis had 26 digs and seven kills on 13 swings while sophomore libero Allyson Severyn had 21 digs and seven
assists.
"We
weren't able to match our energy level from the two wins that we had on
Friday," Canisius coach Cathy Hummel
said. "Combining that with the fact we had to play without one of our top
players, it was a tough match for us today."
Canisius
held an early lead in the first set, going up 7-3, before the Bison made a 9-3 run to take a
17-14 lead. Canisius battled back into the set, getting as close as one point
on two occasions, but Bucknell (2-6) never relinquished the lead en route to
the three-point win.
The
Griffs jumped out to an early lead for the second straight set, going up 9-3
after a Bucknell attack error. The Bison would go on another run, using a 12-4
run to take a 15-13 lead. The Griffs responded and tied the set at five
separate occasions, before taking a 22-21 lead on a kill from Elek. The Bisons
had a set point at 24-23 before the Griffs scored two straight points,
including a block from Elek and Adams to take a 25-24 lead. Canisius eventually
won the set on a Bucknell attack error.
After
Bucknell easily won the third set, the Bison appeared to be cruising to the
four-set win, going up 6-1 early in the set and held a 18-12 lead. The Griffs
then won eight straight points on the serve of freshman Jessica Warner to take a 20-18 lead after a kill from senior Jasmine Brennan. The Bison didn't fold
as Bucknell won six of the next seven points to take a 24-21 lead and win the
set on a kill from Ragin Jackson.
Canisius
opens conference play next weekend when the Golden Griffins play two MAAC games
on the road. The weekend starts at Siena on Saturday, with match time set for 2
p.m.
