Michelle Fridey Earns Academic All-America Honors

Recent Canisius College graduate Michelle Fridey has been named to the 2010 ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America third team, the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced today. She is the seventh Golden Griffin softball player to be named Academic All-American and the second in the last three years after former Griff Katie Miranto was named to the third team following the 2008 campaign.

A two-time MAAC All-Academic honoree, Fridey was named to the All-MAAC first-team all-star unit in 2010 after she hit .395 with 64 hits, 18 doubles, four triples, five home runs, 47 runs scored, 52 RBIs and 17 stolen bases in 53 starts, primarily at the catcher position. After starting her college career at Liberty University, she transferred to Canisius where she closed out her collegiate career by starting 157 consecutive games. She set a new school record for runs batted in during a single season with 52, and she ended her career in Blue and Gold ranked third all-time in school history with 113 career RBIs. A team captain for the 2010 season, Fridey wrapped up her senior season by being named to the MAAC All-Tournament team after she extended her postseason hitting streak to seven-straight games, dating back to the 2009 event.

Fridey is one of 11 players from to be named to the third team and one of 33 student-athletes from across the country to be honored at the University (Division I) level. She recently received her degree from the College in physical/health education. Fridey was named to the All-District First Team in 2009 and 2010 with her 3.86 grade point average on a 4.0 scale.

The 2010 softball team went 37-19 overall and 13-3 in MAAC play to earn a share of the conference's regular season championship, the 13th regular season title in school history. The Griffs saw their season come to an end May 15, when the team lost to Iona in the MAAC Championship game.
