Golden Griffin Mascot Tryout Information

Athletic Department Canisius College Athletics

An open letter to William & Mary from a (really) old friend

On Tuesday, April 6, William & Mary announced that its year-long search for a new mascot has been completed, and the choice is a griffin. The school will continue to use the nickname of the Tribe.

Be sure to check out a blog entry in the Game On! section of the USA Today's online version.

Canisius College athletics began using the Golden Griffin as its nickname and mascot in the mid-1930s. Steve Weller wrote in The Buffalo News Jan. 22, 1962, "You can have your Chihuahuas, Piranhas, Horned Frogs and Iguanas. The best all-around athletic mascot in the business today has to be the beast adopted by Canisius College - the Golden Griffin."
