Box Score The Canisius College men's lacrosse team lost its conference opener on Saturday, falling to Mount St. Mary's, 13-6. The Mountaineers scored six-straight goals and 9-of-10 to take control of the contest and earn the victory.
Junior Adam Jones and sophomore Jimmy Haney led the Griffs by scoring two goals each. Senior Mike Benzinger and sophomore Simon Giourmetakis also scored for the Griffs in the defeat.
After Mount St. Mary's (2-2, 1-0 MAAC) scored the opening goal, Canisius netted three of the next four tallies. Haney knotted the contest at one with his second goal of the season and Benzinger scored his fifth goal to give the Griffs a 2-1 advantage. The Mountaineers tied the game at two but Haney scored with 7:55 remaining in the second period to give Canisius a 3-2 lead.
The Mountaineers, however, would take over from there. Cody Lehrer scored three of his game-high five goals to end the half, giving Mount St. Mary's a 5-3 lead at intermission. The Mountaineers then netted the first three scores of the second half to stretch their lead to five, 8-3. After Jones finally ended the run the Griffs' scoreless run at 25:22 with 12:33 remaining in the game, Mount St. Mary's sealed the victory with another three goals. Giourmetakis and Jones added late scores for the 13-6 final.
Canisius (0-4, 0-1 MAAC) outshot the Mountaineers, 31-27, and held the advantage in faceoffs, 14-8. Brett Schmidt led Mount St. Mary's with six points on three goals and three assists, while T.C. DiBartolo stopped 15 shots to earn the victory.
The Griffs return home for a conference matchup with Manhattan on Saturday. Game time at the Demske Sports Complex is set for 7 p.m.
