Second-Half Run Pushes Manhattan Past Women's Basketball

Manhattan scored the first 11 points of the second half and never relinquished its second-half lead as the Canisius College women's basketball team fell 78-71 in the Draddy Gymnasium on Sunday afternoon. The Golden Griffins fall to 10-17 overall and 5-11 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.

Senior Ellie Radke led Canisius with 15 points, 12 in the first half. Senior Brittané Russell had 11 points, four rebounds and six assists in 29 minutes. Freshman Allison Braun had 10 points and five rebounds while senior Tasia Lee had 10 points and five reounds in 18 minutes off the Canisus bench.

“We're continuing to put ourselves into a hole, specifically at the start of the second half,” Canisius coach Terry Zeh said. “It takes 40 minutes of hard, smart basketball to win conference games, specifically on the road. That's what we need to do to get some positive momentum.”

The teams went back and forth throughout the first half as Manhattan (14-13, 9-7 MAAC) opened the game by making 5-of-6 and 4-of-5 from behind the arc to go up 14-4 less than four minutes into the game. The Griffs responded with a 28-5 run, making 12-of-15 shots to go up 32-19. Radke had 10 of 16 points for the Griffs during the run, that was capped by a free-throw line jumper from Braun with six minutes left in the half. The Lady Jaspers responded with another 14-4 run and got as close as one point on two occasions before Canisius went into the locker room with a 36-33 lead after two free throws from Braun.

The Lady Jaspers carried over that momentum to the start of the second half, scoring the first 11 points and opening the half on a 24-8 run, going up 57-44 on a layup by Nadia Peters with just over 10 minutes remaining.

Canisius was able to cut the Manhattan lead to 64-58 on a layup by Tauralee Tenn with 5:35 left. The Griffs held the Lady Jaspers scoreless for nearly five minutes but could never get any closer during that stretch. Canisius got the Manhattan lead to 67-62 on two free throws from Braun with 1:30 remaining. After a loose ball on a missed layup from Peters went out of bounds with two seconds left on the shot clock, Manhattan found Kerri White open on the right wing and White drained a 3-pointer as the shot clock expired to push the Manhattan lead to 70-62 with one minute remaining.

Lindsey Loutsenhizer led all players with 24 points while Abby Wentworth had 17 points and eight rebounds and Michelle Pacheco added 16 points and nine assists.

Canisius returns to the Koessler Athletic Center for two home games on the final weekend of the regular season, starting with Friday night's game against Saint Peter's. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.

Notes: Canisius extended its NCAA record of consecutive games with a 3-pointer to 481 games on a 3-pointer by Radke midway through the first half… Russell extended her streak of games with a 3-pointer to 24 straight games, tying Amanda Cavo for the third longest streak in program history… Canisius loses in the Draddy Gymansium for the fourth time in the last five seasons... The teams split the season series for the fourth time in five seasons as well… Canisius held a halftime lead for the 10th time in the last 12 games, but is 4-6 in those 10 games… The 19 assists are the most since Canisius had 20 against Manhattan in double overtime on Jan. 11… Canisius made 10 3-pointers for the fourth time this season.
