Canisius
College women's basketball freshman Courtney
VandeBovenkamp (Amherstburg, Ontario) was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic
Conference Rookie of the Week on Monday. VandeBovenkamp is the fourth Golden
Griffin to receive the honor in seven weeks this season.
Prior
to this season, Canisius never had more than two freshmen receive the weekly
honor in the same season. Also, the four Griffs to win the award set a new MAAC
record. The previous record was three, most recently accomplished by Manhattan
and Fairfield in 2004-05.
VandeBovenkamp
led Canisius with 19 points and six rebounds in 25 minutes at Bowling Green on
Monday. The 6-foot-1 forward set a career high in scoring against the Falcons,
going 5-for-6 from the floor and 9-for-9 from the free-throw line.
VandeBovenkamp recorded six or more rebounds for the fourth time and also didn't
commit a turnover for the first time this season.
Other
Canisius freshmen to be named MAAC Rookie of The Week this season are Jen Morabito (Dec. 20), Jamie Ruttle (Dec. 6 and Nov. 29) and Jen Lennox (Nov. 22.).
Canisius (3-7) starts a three-game homestand on
Tuesday, when the Golden Griffins host Maryland Eastern Shore. Game time at the
Koessler Athletic Center is set for 7 p.m.
