Canisius
College women's basketball freshman Jen
Morabito (Binghamton, N.Y.) was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic
Conference Rookie of the Week on Monday. Morabito is the third Golden Griffin
to receive the honor in six weeks this season.
Morabito
scored a career-high 24 points on 7-for-10 shooting, including 5-for-8 from
behind the arc, in the Golden Griffins' 66-58 win at Cornell on Sunday. The 5-foot-9
guard went the distance in the second half, with her 24 points featuring a
four-point play and three-point play while also going 5-for-6 from the
free-throw line. Morabito, playing in a career-high 36 minutes, had the most
points by a Canisius freshman since Amanda Cavo had 28 in February 2006.
Morabito
is the third Golden Griffin to be named MAAC Rookie of the Week this season,
with Jamie Ruttle (Dec. 6 and Nov. 29)
and Jen Lennox (Nov. 22.). Canisius
has three freshmen receive the award in the same season for the first time in
program history. It's the sixth time in league history a team has had three
freshmen win the award, most recently achieved by Manhattan and Fairfield in 2004-05.
Canisius concludes its four-game road stretch on
Tuesday, when the Golden Griffins take on Bowling Green. Game time is set for 7
p.m.
