Getting
26 points and 15 rebounds from senior Kourtney Brown, scoring 42 points in the paint and holding the Canisius
College women's basketball team to 31 percent from the field, the University at
Buffalo defeated the Golden Griffins 79-50 in the Koessler Athletic Center on
Wednesday night. The Golden Griffins fall to 2-3 on the season.
Freshman
Jamie Ruttle led Canisius with nine
points and eight rebounds in 25 minutes off the bench. Sophomore Ashley Durham had eight points and four
assists while junior Steph MacDonald
also had eight points.
"Buffalo
played harder than us tonight and pretty much dominated the game," Canisius
coach Terry Zeh said. "When we get
back on our heels, we didn't play together as a unit. We struggled to run
offense and didn't play solid defense."
Canisius
took an early 7-6 lead on a 3-pointer from senior Micayla Drysdale. The Bulls then went on a 12-2 run during the next
four and a half minutes to take an 18-9 lead. Buffalo extended its lead to as
many as 12 points on a jumper from Kristen Sharkey to make the score 25-13.
Canisius battled back to make it a two-point game at the half. The Griffs
closed the half by scoring eight of the last nine points - including a
3-pointer from MacDonald and two layups from Ruttle to make it 30-28 at the
half.
The
Bulls scored the first five points of the second half to go up 35-28, but
Canisius cut the lead to 36-33 on a layup from senior Caitlin Krull. The Bulls would score 11 straight points to break
the game open as Canisius wouldn't get closer than 15 points the rest of the
way.
Sharkey
had 14 points in 14 minutes off the bench while Brittany Hedderson had 11
points and six rebounds. Ashley Zuber led all players with eight assists. Buffalo held a 50-38 edge in rebounding.
Canisius
concludes its homestand on Saturday, when the Golden Griffins host Duquesne.
Game time in the Koessler Athletic Center is set for 2 p.m.
