Hockey Draws Connecticut, 1-1

Storrs, Conn. - The Canisius College hockey team fought host Connecticut to a 1-1 draw on Saturday night. With the tie, the Griffs now stand at 4-4-2 on the season and 3-3-2 in Atlantic Hockey play, while Connecticut is 2-1-3 and 2-0-1 against conference foes.

Senior Vincent Scarsella scored the lone goal for the Griffs, while freshman Tony Capobianco recorded 39 saves in his collegiate debut to earn the draw.

"Tony Capobianco gave us a real great effort in net tonight," said Canisius head coach Dave Smith. "He played with poise and confidence and looked like a veteran. It was a hard-fought road point where we had chances down the stretch. It was a really good college hockey game."

After a scoreless first period, Scarsella gave the Griffs the lead with his third score of the season. Senior Cory Conacher fed his classmate in the neutral zone and Scarsella skated into the zone and ripped a shot for the 1-0 lead. Sophomore Ben Parker also registered an assist on the goal with 7:07 remaining in the second.

The Huskies tied the game at one early in the third period, scoring 1:20 into the frame. Cole Schneider tipped a shot in for his third goal of the season.

Canisius had the best chance in the overtime period. After a successful faceoff, sophomore Steven Shafer fired a shot toward goal but the puck ringed off the post.

For the game, Connecticut held a 40-36 advantage in shots. Neither teams was able to score on the power play, with the Griffs going 0-for-5 on the night and killing all four Connecticut power plays, including a five minute-major in the third and overtime periods. Garrett Bartus recorded 35 saves on the night for the Huskies.

Canisius returns to action on Saturday, hosting Holy Cross. Game time at the Buffalo State Sports Arena is scheduled for 3:35 p.m.

Game Notes: The last goalie to record a point in his collegiate debut was Ryan Hatch in a 2-1 win against RIT on Oct. 22, 2005 ... Canisius is now 0-2-2 in overtime games this season ... Senior Matt Zuke played his second-straight game on the blue line due to injuries.
