The
Canisius College volleyball team lost in four sets to Fairfield University in
the third-place match at the 2010 MAAC Championship at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Lake Buena
Vista, Fla. on Saturday. The Stags won 23-25, 26-24, 25-21 and 25-21 as the
Golden Griffins complete their season with a 16-17 record.
Junior
Danielle Brawn led Canisius with 14
kills, her third straight match with a season high in kills. Brawn also had 11
digs for her second consecutive double-double. Sophomore Samantha Good had 11 kills and four blocks. Sophomore Allyson Severyn had 23 digs while
junior Janelle Davis had 33 assists.
Canisius
built a 16-11 lead after a kill from senior Jasmine Brennan. The Stags would battle back, tying the match at
19-19 and at 23-23, but Canisius never gave up the lead. The Griffs won the
final two points of the set - capped by another kill from Brennan - to go up
1-0 in the match.
Canisius
held the lead midway through the second set as well, going up 16-11 after a
Fairfield error. The Stags would win six straight points and eventually take a
19-17 lead. However, the Griffs answered with a 6-1 run, getting three kills
from senior Renee Lettow to go up
23-20. The Stags wouldn't go away as Fairfield won the final three points of
the set to even the match at one set apiece.
Fairfield
(13-20) jumped out to a 15-6 lead in the third set before Canisius won four
straight points to cut the lead to 15-10 on consecutive service aces from
Brawn. The Stags came right back and pushed their lead to 19-11. Canisius would
mount a late rally, getting as close as 24-21, but couldn't complete the
comeback.
The
fourth set featured 12 ties and five lead changes as the teams stayed close for
a majority of the set. Canisius was up 18-16 after a service ace from freshman Roxanne Hernandez, but Fairfield would
climb back into the set and won the final five points of the set to win the
match.
Three
Stags had 15 kills on the day - Lauren Hughes, Brianna Dixion and Haililani Pokipala,
who also had 12 digs. Kara Reis recorded 17 digs while Rachel Romansky had 52
assists.
Match Notes: Severyn was named to the All-Tournament Team... Canisius
has played in the third-place match of the MAAC Championship in the 10-team
tournament in Florida each of the last two times (2006 and 2010). Canisius
defeated Manhattan in three sets in 2006... Canisius won two of the three
meetings with Fairfield on the season and the Griffs were 3-17 in its last 20
matches against Fairfield prior to this season... Davis had 30-plus assists in
the final five matches of the season while Severyn had 20-plus digs in the
final five matches as well... Brawn totaled 40 kills in the final 13 sets of 2010...
Good's 11 kills gave her double-digit kills in 20 matches.
