The
Canisius College volleyball team lost in four sets to Iona College in the
semifinals of the 2010 MAAC Championship at the ESPN Wide World of Sports
Complex in Lake Buena Vista, Fla. on Friday. The Gaels won 25-15, 21-25, 26-24
and 25-17 as the Golden Griffins fall to 16-16 overall.
Canisius
will play No. 5 seed Fairfield in the third-place match on Saturday. Match time
is set for 11 a.m.
Junior
Danielle Brawn posted a
double-double with a season-high 13 kills and 16 digs. Junior Janelle Davis also had a double-double
with 34 assists and 10 digs. Sophomore Allyson
Severyn had 22 digs while sophomores Emily
Elek and Samantha Good each had
seven kills with Good adding five blocks. Freshman Roxanne Hernandez had
six kills on 13 attempts to go along with three blocks.
"At
the end of the day, I think Iona just outexecuted us tonight. We struggled in a lot areas,
but our fight was still there from the beginning to the end of the match,"
Canisius coach Cathy Hummel said. "It's
never a good feeling when you don't achieve the goal of a conference
championship, but I feel our program has a lot to look forward to."
Iona
(20-10) won the first three points and never trailed in the first set. The Griffs
made it 12-10 after a kill from senior Jasmine
Brennan, but the Gaels won five straight points and never looked back to
win the opening set.
Canisius
responded in the second set to even the match at one set apiece. The Gaels
would build a 16-13 lead, but Canisius won four straight points, capped by a
kill from Brawn, to take a 17-16 lead the Griffs wouldn't relinquish. Canisius
closed the set on a 6-3 run, capped by another kill from Brawn, to take the
second set.
Canisius
built a 10-2 lead in the third set, but the Gaels chipped away at the Canisius advantage. Iona won the next five points to make it 10-7, but Canisius maintained its
lead. The Griffs had two set points at 24-22, but Iona would win four straight
points, with a kill from Alicja Pawelec giving Iona the 2-1 lead in the match.
Iona
jumped out to an 8-4 lead in the fourth set, but Canisius used a 4-1 run to get
within one at 9-8 after a kill from Hernandez. The Gaels would break open the
set with an 8-1 run and eventually close out the match.
Pawelec
totaled a match-high 18 kills while Colleen Gennett had 16 kills and a .412 attack
percentage. Theresa Harvey had a double-double with 12 kills and 20 digs while
Allison Nieters led all players with 23 digs.
Match Notes: Canisius
played in the semifinals of the MAAC Championship for the third time in the
last five seasons... Canisius and Iona played in the postseason for the second
time, with the other meeting coming in 2002. The Griffs swept the Gaels in the
fifth-place match... Davis had a double-double for the ninth time on the season
and fifth time in the last eight matches... Brawn now has 26 kills in the last nine
sets. The junior had 26 kills on the season prior to this stretch... The double-double was the third of Brawn's career... Severyn had eight service reception attempts,
her second-lowest total of the season... Severyn now has 1,159 career digs and moved into fourth place in career digs in the Canisius record books... Senior Renee Lettow now has played in 431 career sets, tied for second-most in program history... Good had at least five blocks for the third

three matches... Junior Joanna Burt
had eight digs, her third straight match with at least eight digs... Hernandez
