Binghamton Defeats Women's Basketball

VESTAL — Binghamton scored the first seven points of the game, never relinquishing the lead, and Andrea Holmes scored a game-high 28 points as the Canisius College women's basketball team lost 66-50 at the Events Center on Tuesday night.

Sophomore Ashley Durham led Canisius with a career-high 14 points to go along with a career-high seven assists. Freshman Jen Lennox had a career-high 12 points in 21 minutes.

"We got dominated in every aspect of the game tonight. We would let them push us and shove us. They beat us to every rebound," Canisius coach Terry Zeh said. "When things didn't go our way, we didn't battle or grind, which was the opposite of Friday night. Until we turn those things around, it's going to be difficult for us to win basketball games."

Binghamton controlled the pace and offensive glass for the majority of the first half. The Bearcats jumped out to a 7-0 lead before baskets from junior Steph MacDonald and sophomore Allison Braun got the Griffs on the board. Binghamton then pushed its lead to as many as 12 points after a free throw Viive Rebane made it 26-14.

The Griffs then closed the half on an 11-5 run, capped by a basket from Durham just before the buzzer to cut the Bearcats lead to 31-25. Binghamton owned a 31-14 edge on the glass in the first half, pulling down 17 offensive rebounds.

Binghamton scored the first six points of the second half, pushing its lead to 36-25. The Griffs would make it 40-31 after a turnaround jumper from freshman Jamie Ruttle with just under 13 minutes remaining. The Bearcats broke the game open with back-to-back 3-pointers from Holmes, making it 55-40 as Canisius could never cut the Bearcat lead to single digits the rest of the way.

Holmes went 8-for-19 from the floor, including 6-for-15 on 3-pointers. Jasbriell Swain had a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds while Viive Rebane had nine points and 10 boards.

Canisius continues its two-game road swing on Saturday, when the Golden Griffins play at Colgate. Game time in Hamilton, N.Y. is set for 2 p.m.

Notes: Canisius extended its NCAA record of consecutive games with a 3-pointer to 487 games on a 3-pointer by Durham midway through the first half... Canisius lost to Binghamton for the first time in the last five meetings as Canisius now leads the all-time series 4-2... Canisius lost its road opener for the fourth consecutive season... Canisius opens the season 0-2 for the second consecutive season... Durham's previous career high was 12 points, which happened two times last season.
