The
Canisius College volleyball team rebounded from Saturday's loss with a four-set
win at Fairfield at Alumni Hall on Sunday. The Golden Griffins won 25-18,
25-23, 16-25, 25-14 to improve to 14-13 overall and 10-5 in the Metro Atlantic
Athletic Conference.
Sophomore
Samantha Good led the Griffs with 11
kills and posted a .588 attack percentage to go along with four block assists.
Senior Renee Lettow had nine kills
while junior Janelle Davis had 27
assists and five block assists. Sophomore Allyson
Severyn added a match-high 23 digs from the libero position.
"We
made some lineup changes and we had some people respond in today's match," Canisius
coach Cathy Hummel said. "This isn't
an easy place to play, but we stayed focused and didn't buckle."
The
teams stayed close for the first half of the opening set, and Canisius gained
control with a four-point run, taking advantage of three Fairfield errors and a
kill from freshman Roxanne Hernandez.
The Stags cut the Canisius lead to two points on three occasions, but the
Griffs put the set away with a 6-1 run, capped by a block from Good and Davis
to win the set.
The
second set featured 13 ties and nine lead changes as Canisius won four straight
points to go up 13-10 on a kill from Lettow. The Stags battled back and
eventually took a 20-19 lead after back-to-back kills from Hayley Moyer.
Canisius responded with three straight points, but the Stags then won three
straight points to go up 23-22. Canisius closed out the set with another
three-point run, getting a kill from junior Layne Adams, kill from Lettow
and solo block from Adams to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
After
Fairfield (10-16, 9-5 MAAC) won the first four points and never looked back in
winning the third set, Canisius returned the favor by winning the opening eight
points of the fourth set to easily close out the match. Good had three kills
during the opening run on the serve of junior Danielle Brawn. The Stags got as close as 14-10, but Canisius
regained control by winning five straight points to go up as the Griffs never trailed in
the set.
Lauren
Hughes led Fairfield with 11 kills while Brianna Dixion had 10 kills. Kara Reis
led Fairfield with 13 digs while Rachel Romansky led all players with 43
assists.
Canisius
returns home for the final three matches of the regular-season, starting
against Marist on Saturday. Match time in the Koessler Athletic Center is set
for 2 p.m.
