The
Canisius College volleyball team lost in three sets at Iona College in the
Hynes Athletic Center on Saturday. The Golden Griffins lost 25-17, 25-22 and
25-17 and are now 13-13 on the season and 9-5 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic
Conference.
Sophomore
Emily Elek led the Griffs with eight
kills while sophomore Samantha Good
had seven kills on the day. Junior Janelle
Davis had a double-double with 20 assists and 11 digs while
sophomore Allyson Severyn recorded a
match-high 25 digs. Freshman Roxanne
Hernandez led the Griffs with five block assists.
"Iona
came out aggressive and showed the want that is admirable. That's what you need
in late-season conference matches, especially when going on the road," Canisius
coach Cathy Hummel said. "We need to
learn how to overcome obstacles and improve our mental toughness quickly."
Iona
(15-8, 9-4 MAAC) scored six straight points to take an early 8-3 lead in the first
set and eventually went up 12-4 on a service ace from Theresa Harvey. Canisius
never got closer than five points the rest of the way as the Gaels took the
early lead.
The
Gaels won the first five points of the second set and went up 12-4 for the
second straight set before Canisius tried to fight back. The Griffs used a 13-6
run, including two kills from Hernandez, to make the score 18-17. Canisius
could never get closer than one point as the Gaels never relinquished the lead
en route to the second-set win.
Iona
jumped out to an 8-2 lead in the third set, getting two kills from Kelsey Hess
during the early run. The Griffs won the next four points to make it 8-6, but
Iona won six straight to build a 14-6 advantage. Canisius never cut the Iona
lead to less than five points as the Gaels closed out the match.
Theresa
Harvey led all players with 13 kills while Alicja Pawelec had 11 kills and a
.474 attack percentage. Nicole Tamburri had a match-high 33 assists while
Allison Nieters led the team with 23 digs.
Canisius
concludes its regular-season road schedule against Fairfield on Sunday, with
match time set for 2 p.m.
Match Notes: Canisius
has lost its last four matches at Iona... Canisius lost both matches of the
season series against Iona for the first time since the MAAC went to a double
round-robin format in 2006... Davis had a double-double for the second straight
match and for the sixth time this season... Severyn had 20-plus digs for the
eighth time in the last 20 matches... Hernandez set a career high with the four
kills and five blocks.
