Canisius College senior Maura Frauenhofer placed second with
her time of 21:26 and three of her Golden Griffin teammates finished among the
top-20 in the field as the women's cross country team placed second overall at
the 2010 MAAC Cross Country Championships Friday afternoon at Hamonassett State
Park in Madison, Conn. This marks the fourth time in school history that the
Canisius women have placed second in the MAAC Championship race, and it marks
the second-straight year where the Blue and Gold has placed among the
conference's top-three teams.
On the men's side, Canisius freshman
Nate McCabe placed 16th
in the field and teammate Alex Simon
finished 23rd overall as the Griffs placed seventh in the 10-team
field with 175 points. Both the Canisius teams beat long-time rival Niagara on
the day, earning the Griffs four total points in the Battle of the Bridge, an
annual all-sports competition between the two Western New York schools.
Frauenhofer's second-place finish
was the best individual performance at the MAAC Championships for a Canisius
female runner since former Griff Allison Carr won the race in 1997. Frauenhofer
closed out her four-year career at the MAAC Championships placing in the top-20
in four-straight events. Junior Christine
Mulvihill took eighth overall with her time of 22:08, while freshman Mikelle Cala placed 11th in
the field after she crossed the line in 22:14.
Juniors Jill Shea and Julie
Dahlkemper took 17th and 20th, respectively in the
race, with Shea posting a time of 22:30 and Dahlkemper running a 22:46.
Canisius' 58-team points trailed only Iona, which won its sixth-straight MAAC
crown with 21 team points, led by junior Heidi Gregson's winning time of 21:02.
The Canisius men finished the day
with 175-team points after three runners placed among the top-30 finishers, led
by McCabe (25:52) and Simon (26:14). Sophomore Aaron Hoven crossed the finish line in 26:22, while freshman
teammate Ricky Looby finished 52
with his time of 27:14. The Iona men's team, which entered the race ranked No.
4 in the nation, won its 20th consecutive MAAC cross country title,
with Leonard Korir taking top individual honors with his time of 23:50.
Both the men's and women's cross
country teams will return to action Nov. 13 when the teams take part in the
NCAA Division I Cross Country Northeast Regionals at Hammonasset State Park.
The women's race will start at noon, followed by the men's event at 1:15 p.m.
