The
Canisius College volleyball team dropped its first Metro Atlantic Athletic
Conference match of the season, falling in four sets at Saint Peter's in the
Yanitelli Center on Saturday. The Peahens defeated the Golden Griffins 25-18, 25-21, 17-25 and
25-17 as Canisius falls to 8-9 overall and 4-1 in the MAAC.
Sophomore
Samantha Good led the Griffs with 19
kills while hitting .371 on the day. Senior Renee Lettow had 13 kills, and junior Janelle Davis added a double-double with 40 assists and a
season-high 14 digs. Sophomore Allyson
Severyn had a season-high 27 digs.
"Saint
Peter's controlled the momentum right from the start today, and they kept us
from gaining any of the momentum back," Canisius coach Cathy Hummel said. "We committed more unforced errors than our last
two matches combined. We didn't get the leadership necessary to turn it around
when you're struggling on the road."
Saint
Peter's (5-11, 1-4 MAAC) won the first seven points in the opening set and didn't look back, as the Griffs never got closer than four points in the first
set. The teams stayed close until midway through the second set, when the
Peahens broke open a 15-15 tie with a 5-1 run. Canisius cut the Saint Peter's
lead to two points on two occasions, but couldn't come all the way back and
went down two sets in the match.
The
Griffs jumped out to a big lead in the third set, winning six straight points
on the serve of junior Danielle Brawn
to go up 13-7. Saint Peter's responded and cut the Canisius lead to 14-12
before the Griffs broke it open by winning seven of nine points, which included
four kills from Lettow, and would close out the set on a service ace from
Lettow as well.
Saint
Peter's scored six straight points, to turn an 8-7 Canisius lead into a 13-8
lead for the Peahens, getting two kills from Chloe Rost during the stretch.
Canisius was never able to make a run as the Peahens took the match.
Canisius
completes its road trip on Sunday, when the Golden Griffins play at Manhattan.
Match time at the Draddy Gymnasium is set for 2 p.m.
