Volleyball Completes Weekend Sweep with Win at Manhattan

The Canisius College volleyball team took both of its matches in the New York City area this weekend, finishing the sweep with a four-set victory at Manhattan in Riverdale, N.Y. on Sunday. The Golden Griffins defeated the Lady Jaspers 25-21, 25-12, 19-25, 25-18 to win for the fourth time in five matches and improve to 6-8 overall and 3-1 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.

Freshman Samantha Good led the Golden Griffins with 17 kills and 12 blocks in the match, including four solo blocks and eight block assists. Junior Renee Lettow had 11 kills while sophomore Danielle Brawn had eight kills and a match-high 18 digs. Sophomore Janelle Davis had 39 assists, nine digs, eight block assists and five kills on nine attack attempts.

“You can't underestimate how hard it is to win two conference road matches in the same weekend,” Canisius coach Cathy Hummel said. “It's even tougher when you're without one of your top players in Michelle Godfrey. Our team put together two collective efforts this weekend and were rewarded.”

Canisius won five of the final seven points to take the first set. During the run, Good had two kills, Lettow had a kill and Brawn had a service ace to close out the set.

The Griffs dominated the second set, winning the first two points and never looking back as they held the lead the entire set. Canisius had five separate runs of three points or more in the second set.

After Manhattan (5-9, 1-3) won the third set, the Griffs closed out the match in the fourth set. Canisius would slowly pull away, with back-to-back blocks from Davis and Good turning a 9-9 tie into an 11-9 lead. That was a lead the Griffs wouldn't relinquish, winning the match on a service ace from Carley Youngman.

Canisius returns home next weekend to begin a stretch of eight of its next 12 matches in the Koessler Athletic Center. The Golden Griffins host Marist on Saturday, with match time set for 2 p.m.
