Long Beach State pounded out 14 hits and a pair of 49er pitchers held Canisius to one hit as Long beach State defeated Canisius 14-0 in five innings Sunday morning at the 23rd annual National Softball Invitational in San Jose, Calif. The win improves San Jose State to 19-10 overall while the Golden Griffins slipped to 6-8 with the loss.
Long Beach State broke the game open with eight runs on six hits in the top of the second and the 49ers were helped by a pair of Canisius errors in the frame. A total of nine Long Beach State batters helped compile the team's 14 hits, with Jonae Perez leading the attack with three hits, highlighted by her first home run of the season. Jennifer Griffin also had a homer in the win for Long Beach State. She went 2-for-2 with a homer, a double and two RBIs.
For the Griffs, freshman infielder Lauryn Chris recorded the team's only hit, which came in Canisius' half of the third inning off winning pitcher Brooke Turner.
Canisius will return to action Tuesday, March 17, when the team plays a non-conference doubleheader against San Jose State.
