Women's Basketball Loses at Saint Peter's

JERSEY CITY, N.J. ? Saint Peter's held the Canisius College women's basketball team to 22.6 percent shooting from the field as the Golden Griffins lost 55-44 at the Yanitelli Center on Monday night. The Golden Griffins fall to 19-7 overall and 11-4 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, losing for the first time on the road in 12 games.

Senior Marie Warner led the team in scoring with 12 points, the only Golden Griffins to reach double figures as Warner also had 14 rebounds to record her ninth double-double of the season. Junior Brittan? Russell and freshman Stephanie MacDonald each scored nine points.

“Saint Peter's made some shots early but we weren't ready to defend from the start. We didn't make a lot of shots, but our offensive execution was lacking tonight as well,” Canisius coach Terry Zeh said. “From the opening tip, Saint Peter's wanted the game more and that's why they got the win.”

The Peahens started out hot from the field, making six of their first seven shots en route to eventually building a 22-9 lead on a layup by Tania Kennedy at 9:48. The Griffs held Saint Peter's to three field goals for the rest of the half, but Canisius struggled from the field, only making four field goals in the opening 20 minutes. Saint Peter's pushed its lead to as many as 15 points before two free throws from Amanda Cavo made it 30-17 at the half.

Canisius continued to struggle from the field in the second half, as the teams combined for four points during the opening six and a half minutes of the half. A free throw from Ellie Radke cut the lead to 42-30, which would be as close as the Griffs got until the final minutes.

Tania Kennedy led Saint Peter's (11-13, 8-7 MAAC) with 14 points while Jynae Judson had a double-double with 10 points and 14 rebounds.

Canisius returns home for the final three games of the regular season, starting against Loyola on Friday. Game time in the Koessler Athletic Center is set for 7 p.m.
