Bowling Green Defeats Women's Basketball

Using a 17-4 run in the first half, Bowling Green built a double-digit first-half lead and never looked back, defeating the Canisius College women's basketball team 67-42 in the Koessler Athletic Center on Saturday. The Golden Griffins have lost two straight and are now 5-4 on the season.

Senior Brittané Russell led the Golden Griffins with 11 points, to go along with five rebounds and four assists. Senior Ellie Radke had eight points and five rebounds while freshman Melissa Gardner had a game-high seven rebounds.

“We didn't play very well today, and against a veteran, mid-major team, that's going to lead to a tough day for our team right now,” Canisius coach Terry Zeh said. “We've been working to correct our problems on the offensive end, but we need to keep playing hard for 40 minutes, regardless of the margin on the scoreboard.”

Canisius jumped out to a quick 8-3 lead, scoring on the first three offensive possessions of the game. Micayla Drysdale and Russell hit 3-pointers while Gardner drained a jumper to give the Griffs the five-point lead.

Bowling Green (7-3) then scored 17 of the next 21 points, including three 3-pointers in the span of two and a half minutes. Canisius cut the lead to 20-15 on a 3-pointer from Russell with 9:09 left in the half. The Griffs then committed five turnovers during a three-minute span, allowing the Falcons to build a 33-18 halftime lead.

Canisius scored the opening four points of the second half to get within 11 at 33-22. That would be as close as the Griffs could get as Bowling Green maintained the double-digit lead throughout the half, extending the advantage in the final minutes of the game.

Lauren Prochaska led Bowling Green with 17 points while Tracy Pontius and Tamika Nurse each had 11 points, as Nurse added five assists.

Canisius plays its final game before Christmas on Monday, when the Golden Griffins play at Marquette. Game time is set for 8 p.m.
