Marist Defeats Volleyball in Four

After winning the first set, the Canisius College volleyball fell in four sets to Marist in the Koessler Athletic Center on Saturday. The Golden Griffins lost 25-22, 21-25, 21-25, 22-25 and are now 6-9 overall and 3-2 in the MAAC.

Freshman Samantha Good led Canisius with 16 kills – the third consecutive match Good has led Canisius in kills. Junior Renee Lettow had nine kills and a match-high 19 digs. Sophomore Janelle Davis had 38 assists while sophomore Layne Adams had a team-high five blocks.

“We definitely had some struggles on our side of the net today, but Marist had a game plan and executed it as well as I have seen from them,” Canisius coach Cathy Hummel said. “We have to regroup quickly for Sunday's match.”

The Griffs won the first set coming back from a 13-9 deficit with an 8-2 run that featured three kills from Lettow. The Griffs built a 22-18 lead on a kill from Adams and service ace from freshman Allyson Severyn.

Marist (9-7, 3-2 MAAC) would use a similar formula in the next three sets to pick up the victory. The Red Foxes used late runs to pull away from the Griffs.

In the second and third sets, the score was tied at 21-21 before the Red Foxes won four straight points to close out each set. In the fourth and final set, the score was tied at 19-19 before Marist built a little cushion by winning two straight points to go up 21-19. Canisius could only get as close as one the rest of the way.

Canisius closes out the weekend against Siena on Sunday, with match time set for 2 p.m. in the Koessler Athletic Center.
