Volleyball Falls in Three to Buffalo

The Canisius College volleyball team lost its third consecutive match in three sets, falling to Buffalo in the Koessler Athletic Center on Tuesday night. The Golden Griffins lost 25-22, 25-16, 25-22 and are now 10-14 on the season.

Junior Renee Lettow had a team-high nine kills and nine digs. Sophomore Janelle Davis had 20 assists and nine digs while Allyson Severyn had six kills. Freshman Samantha Good added seven kills.

"While I felt that we played with our most consistent energy level of the season, we still came away with a loss," Canisius coach Cathy Hummel said. "We'll have to learn from this match and find a way to win with an important conference weekend ahead of us."

Canisius made a late run in the first set as Buffalo (15-9) pushed its lead to 22-16 on a kill from Kelsey Leuders. The Griffs then won four straight points, which included two service aces from Kaela Glenn. A kill from Layne Adams made the score 23-22 in favor of Buffalo, but the Bulls won the final two points to take the first set.

After Buffalo won the second set by scoring six of the final seven points, the teams played their closest set of the day. Buffalo went up early 6-3, but Canisius won six straight points, which included two kills from Lettow to go up 9-6. The Griffs eventually pushed their lead to 14-9 on a kill from Good, but the Bulls responded with six straight points to go up 15-14. The teams were tied at 17-17 before Buffalo scored six of the eight points to take a 23-19 lead on a kill from Maria Mezzadri. The rally from the Griffs fell short as they cut the deficit to 23-22 on a kill from Good. Buffalo took the final two points of the set to close out the match.

Canisius hosts Rider on Saturday, in the Koessler Athletic Center. Match time is set for 2 p.m.

Match Notes: Canisius lost to Buffalo for the first time in the last three meetings... Sophomore Carley Youngman made her first career start at libero... Severyn saw her double-digit digs streak come to an end at 23 matches as the freshman saw time at outside hitter.
