Volleyball Beats Saint Peter?s in Four

The Canisius College volleyball team defeated Saint Peter's in four sets at the Koessler Athletic Center on Sunday. The Golden Griffins defeated the Peahens 25-16, 21-25, 25-19, 25-19. Canisius has won four of its last five matches and is now 10-11 overall and 7-4 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, holding a half-game lead for third place in the conference standings.

For the second consecutive day, freshman Samantha Good had 19 kills, her ninth straight match with double-digit kills. Sophomore Layne Adams had 10 kills while freshman Allyson Severyn led all players with 22 digs. Sophomore Janelle Davis had her second double-double in three matches with 40 assists and 17 digs.

“We're continuing to struggle on our side of the net and aren't playing our best volleyball,” Canisius coach Cathy Hummel said. “However, we found a way to scrap out another win.”

Canisius jumped out quickly in the first set, scoring the first three points and pushing its lead to as many as nine points, going up 18-9 on a Saint Peter's service error. The Griffs cruised to the first-set win, which ended on a Saint Peter's attack error.

After Saint Peter's (6-14, 3-7 MAAC) won the second set, the Griffs came back to win the next two sets to take the match. Canisius was up 15-12 and went on a 7-3 run to go up 22-15. The Peahens responded with four straight points, but the Griffs won the final three points of the set, capped by two kills from Good. The Griffs also won the fourth set easily – building a 13-4 run that included a run of seven consecutive points on the serve of Severyn. The freshman also served the final three points of the match, including two aces to close out the victory.

Canisius hits the road next weekend for two road matches. The Griffs play at Fairfield on Saturday, with match time set for 2 p.m.

Match Notes: Adams had double-digit kills in her third straight match, for the first time in her career… Good's streak of nine straight matches with double-digit kills is the longest by a Canisius freshman in the last seven seasons… The 17 digs from Davis were a career high, besting her total of 15, which came against Fairleigh Dickinson on Aug. 28… Canisius defeated Saint Peter's for the 10th consecutive meeting.
