Women's Basketball Picks Up Road Win at Manhattan

RIVERDALE, N.Y ? On a cold-shooting day from behind the arc, the Canisius College women's basketball team committed eight turnovers and held Manhattan to 37 percent shooting in a 67-59 victory over the Lady Jaspers at the Draddy Gymnasium on Friday night. The Golden Griffins have won eight straight and improve to 11-4 overall and 3-1 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.

Senior Marie Warner led the team with 18 points and 12 rebounds, her second double-double of the season. Junior Brittan? Russell had 15 points, five rebounds, three assists and three steals while junior Ellie Radke had eight points and 10 rebounds as the Griffs shot 41 percent from the floor, including 2-for-14 on 3-pointers.

“On a day when our 3-pointers weren't falling, it was good to see our team find other ways to score,” Canisius coach Terry Zeh said. “We crashed the glass hard, took care of the basketball and got enough stops to get a road win.”

The teams were cold in the first half, with Canisius shooting under 32 percent and Manhattan shooting 29 percent. With the score 16-13, Canisius would open up an eight-point lead, getting a jumper from Stephanie MacDonald and three-point play from Tasia Lee. Manhattan would get within three on a 3-pointer from Stephanie Halfkenny with 52 seconds left in the half, but Canisius would go into the locker room with a 28-23 lead after a layup by Warner.

Manhattan took a 29-28 lead early in the first half, but Canisius would go on a 25-8 run to build a 16-point lead. During the nine-minute stretch, Russell had seven points and Warner had eight points, with a layup from Radke making the score 53-37.

Manhattan cut the Canisius lead to five points on two separate occasions, getting two free throws from Abby Wentworth, which made the score 62-57 with 1:11 remaining. Canisius would make five free throws in the final 62 seconds to put the game away.

The Lady Jaspers (5-10, 2-2) were led by 16 points and 10 rebounds from Wentworth. Kelly Regan had 16 points and seven rebounds.

Canisius concludes its three-game road stretch on Sunday, when the Golden Griffins play at Iona. Game time is set for 2 p.m.
