Women's Basketball Rebounds With Rout of Manhattan

Scoring the first 16 points of the game and never looking back, the Canisius College women's basketball team rebounded from Friday's loss with a 76-53 victory over Manhattan College in the Koessler Athletic Center on Sunday. The Golden Griffins improve to 13-5 overall and 5-2 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.

Senior Marie Warner led the Griffs with 16 points and 12 rebounds, her second consecutive double-double and third in the last four games. Freshman Stephanie MacDonald had 14 points while senior Amanda Cavo scored 11 points. Sophomore Micayla Drysdale had eight rebounds, three steals and seven assists with one turnover while junior Brittan? Russell had nine points, seven rebounds, three assists and two blocks.

“To rebound from a loss, you need emotional energy and I thought we came out with that. It was really good to see that today from a veteran team,” Canisius coach Terry Zeh said. “We rebounded the way we wanted to and our energy and defensive intensity carried over to us making shots.”

Canisius opened up the game by building a 16-0 lead, getting six points from Cavo and five from MacDonald during the run. Manhattan never cut the lead to single digits, getting as close as 10 at 19-9 on a 3-pointer from Alyssa Herrington at the 8:27 mark. The Griffs would push the lead to as many as 22 points in the first half, going up 34-12 on Cavo's third 3-pointer of the half at 4:03.

Canisius held Manhattan to 18.5 percent shooting in the first half and forced 13 Manhattan turnovers while outrebounding Manhattan 26-20.

The Griffs were ahead by 20 points or more for all but nine seconds of the second half and pushed their lead to as many as 30 points on two separate occasions.

Eleven Golden Griffins played in the contest with 10 recording double-digit minutes. Junior Tasia Lee matched her career high with seven points while sophomore Tauralee Tenn set a career high with seven points.

Kelly Regan led Manhattan (6-12, 3-4) with 14 points and a game-high 14 rebounds while Herrington added 14 points and shot 4-for-10 on 3-pointers.

Canisius has six of its next eight games on the road, starting at Rider on Friday. The Kid's Day contest is set for 12 p.m.
