Fairfield Ends Women's Basketball Winning Streak

Down 10 points at the half, the Canisius College women's basketball team cut the Fairfield lead to two points, but could never get any closer in a 54-46 loss to the Stags at the Koessler Athletic Center on Friday night. The loss ends a nine-game winning streak for the Golden Griffins, who are now 12-5 on the season and 4-2 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.

Senior Marie Warner had her third double-double of the season and second in two games, recording 14 points and 11 rebounds. Junior Brittan? Russell had 16 points while junior Ellie Radke added eight points for Canisius.

“We were lethargic throughout the entire game. Our offense was stagnant, and Fairfield did a nice job defensively,” Canisius coach Terry Zeh said. “We tried to battle back in the second half, but gave up key rebounds and didn't execute offensively.”

The low-scoring game featured a slow-paced first half, as the Stags built an 11-4 lead when Canisius was held scoreless for a stretch of nearly seven minutes. A jumper from Amanda Cavo ended the Canisius drought as the Griffs would score seven consecutive points to tie the game at 15-15 on a 3-pointer from Warner at 6:14. Fairfield (9-8, 4-2 MAAC) held Canisius scoreless for the rest of the half, building a 10-point halftime lead.

Canisius cut the Fairfield lead to 29-26 on a layup from Radke at 15:18, but Fairfield responded with seven consecutive points, pushing the lead back to 10 points on a jumper from Stephanie Geehan.

The Griffs cut the Fairfield lead to two points on two separate occasions, with a jumper from Warner trimming the lead to 48-46 with 4:18 remaining. Canisius would go scoreless for the rest of the game as the Stags tallied the final six points of the game.

Baendu Lowenthal led all players with 21 points, going 10-for-15 from the field, and also had nine rebounds. Lauren Groom and Geehan each had 10 points as Geehan recorded five blocks.

Canisius concludes its weekend homestand on Sunday, when the Golden Griffins host Manhattan. Game time in the Koessler Athletic Center is set for 2 p.m.
