Fifty-five percent of the Canisius student-athletes boast a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better, a number that is 20 percent higher than the general student population at the College. Six student-athletes had a perfect 4.0 grade point average for the 2008 spring semester and the Griffs closed out the 2007-08 academic year by placing a total of 84 student-athletes on their respective conference's all-academic teams.

Leading the way was the women's cross country team, which posted an athletic department best 3.43 team grade point average for the 2008 spring semester. The volleyball team's spring semester GPA of 3.40 ranked second, while softball (3.38), men's cross country (3.35), women's basketball (3.34), golf (3.34) and synchronized swimming (3.34) all recorded collective grade point averages of 3.2 or better. The women's swimming and diving team (3.14), the hockey team (3.10) and the women's lacrosse program (3.01) round out the list of programs that were 3.0 or better for the spring semester.

“Our student-athletes had a terrific year both in the classroom and on the playing field,” Canisius Director of Athletics Bill Maher said. “This outstanding achievement is another positive example of how our student-athletes represent Canisius College and demonstrate the commitment to academic success that is shared by our student-athletes and athletic staff.”
