Women's Lacrosse Falls to No. 12 Notre Dame

South Bend, Ind. ? The Canisius College women's lacrosse team lost a hard-fought battle to 12th-ranked Notre Dame, 22-10, in the Griffs' season openers.

“I felt we played hard and we competed,” said Canisius head coach Scott Teeter. “We fought back from an early deficit and made a game of it. However, their depth kicked and that is what made the difference. It was a good measuring stick for our team and I'm proud of how hard we competed today.”

Junior Ashley Gray (pictured) led the Griffs with five points on three goals and two assists. Senior Whitney Card and junior Chelsea Martinez both tallied two goals for Canisius, while senior Lauren Walsh, sophomore Brett Poissant and freshman Taylor Gray also scored to round out the scoring for the Griffs.

Freshman Allison Daley recorded 15 saves in her first collegiate start in goal.

The Irish (1-0) scored the first six goals of the game but the Griffs responded with a run of their own, tallying four goals in a 2:19 span. Card started the run and Poissant, Martinez and Ashley Gray also scored for Canisius as the Griffs pulled to within two, 6-4.

However, Notre Dame ended the half on a 4-1 run to head into the intermission with a 10-5 advantage. Martinez scored her second and the team's fifth goal of the half to lead the Griffs' offense during the opening period.

Canisius scored four of the first six goals in the second half to pull within three, 12-9. After Notre Dame scored the period's first goal, Ashley Gray and Walsh both scored for Canisius. The Irish would score to reclaim its five-goal advantage but Taylor Gray and Card answered right back as the Griffs trailed by only three goals with 18:38 remaining. However, Notre Dame would respond by scoring the game's next 10 goals before Ashley Gray responded with a score.

The Griffs return to action on Wednesday, squaring off against Syracuse at the Carrier Dome. Game time is set for 7 p.m.

Game Notes: The Griffs fell to 2-9 in season openers during the program's history ... Senior Erica Nasca tied the school record with her 90th career draw control ... Sister Ashley assisted on Taylor Gray's first collegiate goal ... The Griffs fell to 0-3 all-time against ranked opponents. All three games are against the Irish.
