? The Canisius College volleyball team lost in three sets at Manhattan on
Sunday, falling 25-11, 25-16, 25-21 in Draddy Gymnasium. The Golden Griffins
are now 16-10 overall and 11-6 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.
Sophomore
Renee Lettow led Canisius with nine
kills while senior Morgan Ammons had
seven kills for the Griffs. Freshman Janelle
Davis totaled 23 assists while freshman Layne Adams led the team's block with four block assists.
“We
had our worst match of the season when we needed to get a win,” Canisius
coach Cathy Hummel said. “We have a
week ahead of us to regroup and next weekend get to play at home, a place we've
had success this season.”
Manhattan
controlled the first set, winning the first three points and not relinquishing
the lead. The Lady Jaspers would win 15 of the final 18 points of the set,
including a nine-point run on the serve of Andrea Reiff, to go up 1-0 in the
match.
The
Lady Jaspers carried that momentum into the second set. With Canisius up 2-1,
Manhattan reclaimed the lead with an 8-2 run to make it 10-4 on a kill by
Sherryta Stokes. Canisius would only get as close as five points the rest of
the way.
Manhattan
(10-16, 9-7) would build an early lead for the third consecutive set, going up
by as many as five at 11-6, but the Griffs would battle their way back into the
set. Canisius chipped away at the lead and tied the match at 17-17 after a
Manhattan error. With the scored tied at 18-18, the Lady Jaspers would win five
straight points and eventually close out the match.
Sherryta
Stokes led all players with 17 kills as Manhattan posted a team attack
percentage of .424. Alyssa Getzel recorded a double-doubule with 38 assists and
10 digs.
Canisius
wraps up its regular-season schedule on Saturday night, when the Golden
Griffins host Niagara on Senior Night at the Koessler Athletic Center. Match
time is set for 7 p.m.

Canisius lost to Manhattan for the first time in seven matches... Manhattan has
won three of the last five in Riverdale... Sarah
Podlesh didn't record double-digit digs for the first time since Oct. 11,
also against Manhattan... Lettow posted an attack percentage of .300 or better
for the sixth time in seven matches... During that stretch Lettow is leading the
team in kills per set (3.41) and attack percentage (.329).
