The
Canisius College volleyball team dug itself an early hole, but recovered to
defeat Manhattan College 23-25, 25-20, 25-21, 25-17 at the Koessler Athletic
Center Saturday afternoon.
Senior
Morgan Ammons led the Golden
Griffins (10-6, 5-2 MAAC) with 15 kills and 17 digs while freshman Layne Adams had a career-high 10 kills
while hitting .333. Freshman Janelle
Davis had 38 assists and five kills on seven attack attempts.
“Manhattan
came out with more energy and was able to win the first set,” Canisius coach Cathy Hummel said. “That was the
quickest we've been able to shift the momentum into our favor and we were able to get a
positive result out of the match.”
The
teams stayed closed for the majority of the first set and Manhattan (4-12, 3-4)
used a five-point run to turn a 19-18 Canisius lead into a 23-19 advantage.
Canisius
responded in the second set, breaking open an 11-11 score with a quick
four-point run, which included two kills from Adams. Manhattan got as close as
one, making it 21-20, before the Griffs won the final four points of the set to
even the match.
Canisius
took a small lead midway through the third set, which proved to be enough. Canisius
won two points to turn a 13-13 tie into a 15-13 lead. The Griffs wouldn't keep
the lead the rest of the way, but not go ahead by more than three until a
Manhattan error on the final point of the set.
The
Griffs would run away with the fourth set, winning 11 of 12 points to turn a
10-9 deficit into a 20-11 advantage. Canisius got a five-point run on the serve
of Ammons and a seven-point run on the serve of Sarah Podlesh to take control of the set and put away the match.
Sherryta
Stokes led the Lady Jaspers with 15 kills while Rita Welsh had 12 kills and a
team-high .440 attack percentage.
Canisius
hosts Iona on Sunday. Match time at the Koessler Athletic Center is set for 2
p.m.
