Junior Alex Brown (Lancaster, N.Y.) placed eighth overall with her time of 19:17 to help lead the Canisius College women's cross country program to a record of 4-2 at the Duquesne Duals Saturday morning in Pittsburgh. On the men's side, sophomore Matt Butters (St. Catherines, Ont.) was the top Canisius finisher after posting a 15th-place finish with a time of 27:12.
Freshman Maura Fraunehofer (Williamsville, N.Y.) crossed the finish line in 19:55 to earn a 15th-place finish in the women's event, while teammates Samantha Garnet (Monroe, N.Y.) (20:03) and Jess Nowak (Orchard Park, N.Y.) (20:09) placed 17th and 18th respectively.
Junior Chris Castleman (Phoenixville, Pa.) recorded a time of 28:29, placing him 40th overall. Justin Weldon (Lockport, N.Y.) finished 41st in the event, registering a time of 28:35, while Brett Finnan (Lockport, N.Y.) (28:56) and Vasilis Kariolis (West Hurley, N.Y.) (28:59) finished 50th and 51st.
The Golden Griffin women posted wins over Niagara (20-39), Carnegie Mellon (16-42), Wheeling Jesuit (15-49) and St. Bonaventure (16-47) to place third among the seven teams participating in the event. The Pittsburgh women's team finished the duals with a 6-0 record.
Host Duquesne recorded a 7-0 mark in the men's event of the duals. The Griffs earned two team wins by defeating St. Bonaventure 15-46 and Wheeling Jesuit 19-43. Both the men's and women's cross country programs are set to return to action Friday, Sept. 14, at the National Catholic Championships in South Bend, Ind.

The Canisius College men's soccer opened the 2007 season with a pair of non-conference matches last week, with the team falling in both outings. The Golden Griffins opened the campaign Aug. 31, at Connecticut and fell to the No. 25 Huskies 3-2, before dropping the 2007 home opener to Robert Morris in double overtime by a 2-1 count.
All three of Canisius' goals this season have come in the final 10 minutes of regulation time. Senior Simba Aberdeen (St. Joseph, Trinidad) forced the Robert Morris game into overtime with his first goal of the season in the game's 89th minute. Sophomore Alan McGreal (Dublin, Ireland) scored the Griffs' first goal of the 2007 season at UConn in the game's 80th minute on a penalty kick, and he later posted an assist on Adam Studniarek's (Jelenia, Poland) tally in the 84th minute. Aberdeen also earned an assist on Studniarek's goal Aug. 31, giving him at least one point in three of the team's last four games, dating back to last season.
Freshman goalkeeper Adam Catley (Toronto, Ont.) has helped keep the Blue and Gold in both games this year, posting a total of 21 saves through 199:04 of play.
The men's soccer team will have a week off before returning to the pitch Friday, Sept. 14, against Detroit in the first match of the BGSU Invitational in Bowling Green, Ohio.

The Griffs recorded a record of 0-1-1 to open its 27th season of play last weekend. Canisius fell to Duquesne in its season opener, 2-0, before tying the University at Buffalo, 1-1, in its home opener on Sunday.
In starting both contests, sophomore Daniella Pettinari (Hilton, N.Y.) recorded a career-best seven saves in back-to-back games. Against the Bulls, Pettinari made three saves in the closing minutes of regulation and one in overtime to help the Griffs preserve the tie.
Senior Amanda Janosky (Derby, N.Y.) recorded the team's first goal of the season against the Bulls. Janosky took a great pass from junior Maggie Martini (Wallkill, N.Y.) and shot it past the Bulls' goalkeeper to tie the game in the 79th minute.
The Griffs are back on the road on Friday, squaring off against St. Francis (Pa.) at 4 p.m. Canisius will then return home to face Akron on Sunday. Game time is set for noon at the Demske Sports Complex.

The Canisius College volleyball team went 1-3 in four matches in the Western New York Invitational as the Griffs picked up their first win of the season against St. Francis (N.Y.). and lost to Fordham, Binghamton and West Virginia.
Junior Brittany Gerde (Cincinnati, Ohio) earned All-Tournament Team honors after totaling 80 assists and 29 kills on the weekend. She ranked second on the team in hitting percentage (.236) behind Michella Domo (Vancouver, B.C.). The freshman had 53 kills in the four matches and hit .412, including highs of 17 kills against Binghamton and a hitting percentage of .562 against St. Francis (N.Y.).
Senior Jess Stackhouse (Warsaw, N.Y.) set the school's all-time record in digs by passing Erin Oveis in the team's loss to Binghamton. Stackhouse has 1,579 digs in her career. On the weekend, the libero averaged 4.65 digs per game with her high coming against Binghamton when she had 28.
After recording a total of 16 blocks in the first four matches of the year, the Griffs have 36 blocks in their last three games with the high of 13 coming against the Mountaineers. Michelle Godfrey (Tonawanda, N.Y.) led the team with 1.29 blocks per game in the four matches as four Canisius players totaled at least 12 block assists in the Western New York Invitational.
Canisius returns to the road this weekend with three matches in the Golden Flash Invitational held at Kent State University. The Griffs will play Binghamton on Friday, Sept. 7, before playing Kent State and Youngstown State on Saturday.
