Miranto Named to NFCA All-Region First Team

Canisius College softball player Katie Miranto (right) has been named to the 2006 Mid-Atlantic All-Region First Team, as voted on by members of the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA). Miranto is one of three players from the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference to be honored and is now eligible for NFCA All-America consideration. That list will be announced during the Women's College World Series in Oklahoma City.

Miranto closed out her sophomore season with a team-high .402 batting average where she collected 66 hits, which set a new school record for hits in a single-season. She led the team in 10 different offensive categories, including slugging percentage (.604), on-base percentage (.459), runs scored (38), doubles (13), triples (4), total bases (99), stolen bases (12) and walks (18). A starter in all 51 games during the 2006 season, Miranto posted a .964 fielding percentage with 102 putouts, 83 assists and just seven errors in 192 chances.

The all-region selection marks the fifth postseason award for Miranto in the last seven days. She was one of two Golden Griffins to earn first-team All-MAAC honors, while also earning MAAC All-Tournament accolades after she hit .500 (3-for-6) in the team's two MAAC softball Tournament games last weekend in Fairfield, Conn. Miranto was also honored for her work in the classroom last week. She was named to the 2006 CoSIDA All-Academic Softball District I Second Team and to the MAAC All-Academic Team for the first time in her collegiate career.

Miranto was joined on the first team by Marist pitcher Megan Rigos. Last year, Canisius pitcher Andrea Bunten was honored as a second-team all-region selection.

The Canisius softball team closed out the 2006 season with a 28-23 overall mark and a 13-3 record in conference play. The Griffs won the MAAC regular season title for the 10th time in school history and for the first time since 2001.
