Canisius Softball Nationally Honored For Academic Record

COLUMBIA, Mo. -? The Canisius College softball team has been honored by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) as a winner of one of the academic Top 10 Awards, based on cumulative team grade-point averages submitted by NFCA member head coaches for the 2001-2002 academic year. Academic Top 10 winners are recognized in five collegiate categories (NCAA Division I, II and III; NAIA and junior college) and two high school divisions (weighted scale and non-weighted scale).

The Griffs finished the 2002 season with a 33-16 overall record and a 13-3 league mark in the MAAC, earning a share of the regular season conference title for the ninth time. The Griffs captured the MAAC Softball Tournament in dramatic fashion, winning three straight game on the final day, culminating with a 3-2 come-from-behind win over Fairfield University for the championship. Canisius traveled to the NCAA Softball Championships Regional Six in Ann Arbor, Mich., their second appearance in the NCAA Regionals in three years.
