Michael Wernicki returns to the Canisius staff for his second season. In addition to serving as the recruiting coordinator, his duties include on-floor coaching, monitoring academic progress and scouting.
Wernicki came to Buffalo from Merychurst in Erie, Pa., where he spent six seasons as an assistant coach. He helped guide the Lakers to three conference tournament appearances and aided in the recruitment and development of two Freshmen of the Year and eight all-conference players, including former Niagara University forward Demond Stewart, who transferred from Mercyhurst.
A native of Erie, Pa., Wernicki walked on at the University of Pittsburgh and earned two letters. During his career, the Panthers made appearances in the 1992 NIT and the 1993 NCAA Tournament. Following his playing career, he spent a season as a student coach with the Panthers.
Wernicki graduated with a bachelor's degree in communication and English writing from Pitt in 1996. He spent one season as an assistant coach at Franklin Regional High School, where he helped lead his team to the state championship game and a 29-4 record.
Wernicki is currently pursuing is master's degree in sport administration at Canisius and resides in Buffalo.
