MacDonald enters her second season as an assistant coach with the Canisius College swimming and diving team. As a collegiate competitor, MacDonald was elected captain of the women's swim team during her senior year, where they earned first place in the SUNYAC championship. Also in 2008, MacDonald was a member of the 400 and 800 freestyle relays that set the school and SUNYAC records, and also met NCAA provisional times. A two-time SUNYAC champion in the 400 and 800 freestyle relays, she was also a four-time SUNYAC finalist in the 50, 100, 200 and 500 freestyle, and the 200 breaststroke.

MacDonald began her career in high school, where she qualified for the state meet three consecutive years and was an All-American in the 200-freestyle relay for the 2002-03 school year.

Her coaching experience includes a five-year stint as the supervisor of pool activities and swim lessons at the Lockport Community pool, and she also coached a high school swim camp for Lockport-area swimmers during the summer of 2008.

She is currently a student in the Canisius College Master of Sport Administration (MSA) program and intends to graduate in May of 2010.
