GOLF WINS 2015 LITTLE THREE CHAMPIONSHIP

GRAND ISLAND, N.Y. – For the second-straight year and for the fifth time in the last six seasons, the Canisius golf team captured the Little Three Championship on Wednesday, besting long-time rivals Niagara and St. Bonaventure by two strokes at River Oaks Golf Club. Canisius, which earned its 12th Little Three title since the annual event began in 1952, posted a team score of 700, two strokes better than the rival Purple Eagles and Bonnies.

“This is an event we always circle on the schedule and this program takes pride in playing well and looking to build on our recent success at the Little Three,” Canisius head coach Todd Hummel said. “I thought our guys really battled today. The weather wasn’t ideal, but we had a lot of guys contribute to the effort, which was really key because the whole event came down to the last few holes. It is always nice to be able to bring the Little Three trophy back to our campus for another year.”

Canisius sophomore Cory Cullen shot a second-round score of 74 and finished the 36-hole tournament with a two-round tally of 152, which placed him fourth in the field. That fourth-place finish marked the first top-five finish in Cullen’s college career. Fellow junior David Berkun shot 78-75 for a two-round score of 153 to tie for fifth, where he was joined by Canisius teammate Andrew Romano, who also carded a 153. Seniors Brendan Polsin and Hunter Sagar each shot 156 for the tournament and finished the day tied for ninth.

St. Bonaventure senior Josh Stauffer shot a four-over par score of 148 to claim the 2015 Little Three Championship individual title. With the win, Stauffer has earned an automatic berth into the 2016 Porter Cup, which will be played next July at Niagara Falls Country Club.

The Griffs will close out the 2015 fall season Oct. 4-5 when the team travels to play in the Binghamton Fall Classic in Apalachin, N.Y.
