Men’s Soccer Drops Metro Opener at Iona

Iona tallied four goals in the first half as it cruised to a 6-1 win over Canisius in Metro Conference men's soccer action Saturday at Mazzella Field in New Rochelle, N.Y.

Francesco Borla and Brayden O'Boyle both netted a pair of goals while Ricardo Vivo Calderon and Rudy Figueroa accounted for the other Gaels (2-3-2, 1-0 Metro) tallies. Adriano Sofio started in net for the Gaels, making three saves.

Junior Romero Nicolazzo netted the lone goal for Canisius (1-6, 0-1 Metro) on a penalty kick in the first half. Graduate goalkeeper Preston Harold started in net for Canisius, making five saves.

Iona got on the board just 11 minutes into the match as Canisius was called for a foul in the box and Calderon stepped up and drilled home the penalty kick to take an early lead.

The Gaels continued to apply pressure and were rewarded in the 22nd minute as Ignacio Manzanares collected a loose ball and found a streaking VCalderon, who eventually connected with Borla at the back post. Borla slotted the ball past Harold to extend Iona's lead to 2-0.

The Griffs responded five minutes later after being awarded a penalty in the 27th minute. Junior Romero Nicolazzo stepped up and converted the opportunity, cutting the Gaels' lead in half.

Iona's O'Boyle potted the Gaels' third goal of the first half in the 34th minute, working past a pair of defenders to the inside before beating Harold to the lower right corner to restore Iona's two-goal cushion.

The Gaels' big first half was capped off by O'Boyle's second goal of the half just 10 minutes later. Artiz Ortigosa found the Gaels forward in the box, where O'Boyle placed a shot in the bottom-right corner to send Iona into the break with a 4-1 lead.

Iona added to its lead 11 minutes into the second half as Rudy Figueroa played a through ball to Borla between a pair of defenders, who then beat the keeper to extend the Gaels' lead to four.

The Gaels closed out the scoring in the 67th minute as Figueroa netted his first collegiate tally, slotting home a shot from the top of the box into the top-left corner to cap the 6-1 win.
