The Canisius men's and women's cross country team hits the road for the first time this season Friday at the National Catholic Invitational, hosted by Notre Dame. The women's 5k race is slated for 11:00 a.m., while the men's 8k will take place beginning at 11:40 a.m.

Canisius is making its third consecutive appearance at the event and 43rd trip to South Bend, Ind., for the annual race. Last season, the Griffs men placed sixth at the event, while the women placed seventh.

The Griffs are coming off a season-opening race, hosting the Little Three Championships on Sept. 5 at Delaware Park. The men's team walked away with its 20th consecutive title while the women placed third.

Led by a third-place finish from junior Fenway Breckels, the Canisius men's team placed seven runners in the top-12 to claim the title. Juniors Nathaniel Fisher (15:37.3), Ryan Giglia (15:37.7) and Joseph Capuzzo (15:40.0) placed fifth through seventh. Just behind them, sophomores Tim Lukasik (15:52.0), Jack Stanford (15:54.0), junior Adam Kozman (16:06.2), and sophomore Jacob Granville (16:06.9) rounded out the top-12, placing ninth through 12th, respectively.

In her collegiate debut, freshman Emily Priset claimed the top spot for the Griffs women, finishing in sixth place with her time of 19:36.9. Sophomore Julia Gullo placed 14th in the race for Canisius, crossing the line in 20:12.9.

The Griffs are back in action Oct. 2 as the team travels to Bethlehem, Pa., to take part in the Paul Short Run, hosted in Lehigh.
