Men’s Lacrosse Mourns the Passing of Jason Cummings ’95

The Canisius athletic department mourns the passing of former men's lacrosse standout and Canisius Sports Hall of Famer Jason Cummings '95, who passed away following a brief illness on Feb. 6.

Born in Buffalo and raised in Rochester, N.Y., Cummings was a member of the Golden Griffin program from 1992-95, amassing 105 goals and 81 assists for 186 points. The first player in program history to surpass the 100-goal milestone, Cummings currently ranks third on the Griffs' all-time points and goal charts, while sitting fourth in program history for career assists.

A team captain during his senior season, Cummings graduated with a degree in marketing from Canisius in 1995. He was inducted into the Canisius Sports Hall of Fame as a member of the Class of 2011.

Upon graduation, Cummings built an accomplished career as a foreign service officer with the United States Government, earning numerous prestigious awards in recognition of his service, professionalism and commitment to representing and serving his country for over two decades across five continents.

Cummings' greatest passions were his family, traveling the world and playing lacrosse with his long-time teammates. He was a proud and devoted fan of the Buffalo Sabres, Buffalo Bills and the New York Yankees. Cummings will be remembered for his intelligence, lust for life, sense of humor and the deep love and loyalty he had for his family, friends and colleagues.

A celebration of Jason's extraordinary life will be held on June 20, 2026 in Western New York, where family and friends will gather to honor his memory and the life he lived so fully. More details regarding the celebration of life will be shared once they become available.

In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations to the Wounded Warrior Project, a cause Cummings held close to his heart, be made in his honor.
