Softball Drops Final Game of Series at Niagara

Niagara scored nine times between the second and fourth innings to earn a 9-7 victory over Canisius in the final game of a three-game MAAC series Friday afternoon at Niagara Field in Lewiston, N.Y.

The win improved the Purple Eagles to 6-27 overall and 4-13 in MAAC play, while the Golden Griffins slipped to 21-18 overall and 11-6 in conference action. Despite losing the game, which ended the Griffs' five-game win streak, Canisius earned two points in the annual "Battle of the Bridge" rivalry series by taking the three-game set, 2-1.

GAME RECAP
Canisius jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after batting twice, thanks to a two-run home run off the bat of junior Sofia Escoto in the first inning, and a solo homer by senior Morgan Cook in the top-half of the second. In the first, sophomore Ella Johel got things started with a one-out triple, and she later scored on Escoto's two-run shot, her second homer of the season. In the second, Canisius pushed its lead to 3-0 thanks to a solo homer to left-center by Cook. That home run was the first of the Auburn, N.Y., native's collegiate career.

In the home-half of the second, Niagara trimmed Canisius' lead to 3-2 on a pair of RBI-singles by Sophia Marrero and CJ Haney. In the third, Canisius answered with a run to make it 4-2 after freshman Cara Edwards singled through the infield to drive home teammate Rebecca Hai.

Niagara scored four times in the third to take a 6-4 lead. Bri Delaney's two-run homer in the frame tied the game at 4-4, and another RBI-single by Haney put the Purple Eagles ahead at 5-4. Niagara added an additional run in the frame after Lindsay Mayo drew a bases-loaded walk with two outs. That would be the last batter that Canisius starting pitcher Olivia Manchester would face on the day, as she was lifted for reliever Toria Kover, who promptly got the final out with a fly ball to right.

Niagara took advantage of three Canisius errors in the fourth to make the score 9-4 in favor of the home team. Canisius got a pair of runs back in the fifth thanks to back-to-back home runs by junior Bailey Alatorre and Edwards, and an RBI-single to right in the sixth by Escoto made it a two-run game at 9-7, but that would be as close as the Blue and Gold would come late in the game.

Niagara starter Aubrey Tamayo earned her second win of the season in the circle after she gave up seven runs, six earned, on 10 hits while walking four and striking out two. Manchester took the loss for the Griffs after she gave up six runs, four earned, on five hits, to go with four walks and three strikeouts. Only four of the Purple Eagles' nine runs scored on the day were earned.

Edwards went 3-for-4 with a home run, two RBI and a run scored in the loss for Canisius, while Escoto finished the day by going 2-for-4 with three runs batted in and a run scored. Johel scored twice in the losing effort for the Blue and Gold, while senior Alyssa Cloutier added a hit and stole a base.

GAME NOTES
• Canisius has played more games (135) against Niagara than against any other opponent. The Griffs lead the all-time series 103-31-1.
• The nine runs allowed by Canisius are the most for the Griffs in a game since the team lost to Marist 11-1 in five innings back on April 1.
• The four home runs for the Griffs are the most for the team since May 1, 2023, when the team had four home runs at Niagara.
• Escoto extended her hitting streak to six straight, while freshman Tabitha von Kolen has now reached base safely in 12-straight ball games.
• Edwards matched a season-high with the three hits in the loss. She also had three hits in a game against Colgate back on March 16.
• Cloutier's stolen base in the game gives her 20 on the season. She has stolen 10-straight bases successfully without being caught, dating back to March 9 against Lafayette.
