Softball Scores Sweep of Saint Peter’s

The Canisius softball team closed out its 10-game MAAC homestand on Tuesday with a doubleheader sweep of Saint Peter's, with the Golden Griffins taking the first game 10-2 in six innings before posting a 16-7 mercy-rule, five-inning victory in the nightcap.

The pair of wins extended Canisius win streak to three straight and improved the Blue and Gold to 19-17 overall and 9-5 in conference play, while Saint Peter's fell to 9-24 overall and 1-12 in conference action.

GAME ONE RECAP
Trailing 2-0 heading into the home-half of the fifth, Canisius exploded for 10 runs in its last two at-bats, highlighted by a nine-run fifth inning that saw the Griffs send 13 batters to the plate. After senior Alyssa Cloutier drew a leadoff walk in the fifth and then stole second base, freshman Tabitha von Kolen hit a ground ball to short. The Saint Peter's shortstop tried to make a play on Cloutier at second base, but threw the ball into right field, allowing Cloutier to score the Griffs' first run, while von Kolen raced to second base. With von Kolen at third and one out, senior Emily Ilano dropped down a bunt base hit which allowed von Kolen to score from third, tying the game at 2-2.

With the bases loaded and one out in the frame, junior Bailey Alatorre drew a walk, pushing senior Rosie Gomez home with the eventual game-winning run. Canisius scored seven more times in the frame with two outs, highlighted by a bases-clearing triple off the bat of von Kolen, which made the score 8-2 in favor of the home team.

In the sixth, Gomez ended the game early after she took the first pitch she saw from Saint Peter's reliever Brielle Coppola over the fence in left-center to end the game early. Coppola took the loss in the circle for the Peacocks after she allowed 10 runs, three earned, on six hits to go with five walks in 3.0 innings of work.

Canisius had seven hits in the game one victory, with six of those coming in the team's last two at-bats. von Kolen ended the first game by going 2-for-3 with a triple, three RBI and two runs scored and fellow freshman Vivi Vargas went 1-for-2 with a double, two RBI and a run scored. Gomez scored twice as well in the win for Canisius, the team's eighth mercy-rule win of the season.

Sophomore Olivia Manchester improved her record to 13-1 on the year after she went the distance scattered seven hits over 6.0 innings of work. She allowed single runs in the first and fifth innings and ended the day with three strikeouts and three walks.

GAME TWO RECAP
The Griffs' offense picked up where it left off in game two, as the Blue and Gold scored eight runs in the bottom of the first to take an 8-2 lead after one inning of play. The big hit in the home-half of the first came off the bat of freshman Cara Edwards, who gave Canisius the lead for good with a grand slam that made the score 6-2 in favor of the home team.

In the second inning, Canisius sent 10 batters to the plate and tacked on seven more runs to take a 15-3 lead after two innings of play. Saint Peter's scored four times in the top-half of the fourth to trim the Canisius lead to 15-7, but the Blue and Gold added an insurance run in the fourth when Gomez drove in a run with a base hit to center, allowing von Kolen to score.

The 16-run performance marked the second time this season the Griffs scored 16 runs in a home game, with the other occasion coming March 20 in the win over St. Bonaventure, and the team's 14 RBI set a new season high. Sophomore Ella Johel went 2-for-4 with a double, four RBI and two runs scored, while Edwards also had four RBI thanks to her first career grand slam. Von Kolen went 3-for-4 with an RBI and three runs scored in the nightcap, while Vargas and junior Sofia Escoto also scored twice in the victory as well.

Senior Kate Wiggins scored the win in the circle for the Blue and Gold, her first of the season, after she threw the game's first three innings.
