Mount St. Mary's Scores Late to Defeat Women's Lacrosse

Mount St. Mary's Anna Salerno scored four goals, with three of those coming in the game's final quarter, to help lead the visiting Mountaineers to an 11-10 victory over Canisius in MAAC women's lacrosse action Saturday afternoon at the Demske Sports Complex in Buffalo, N.Y.

Anna McQuay added a hat trick and Mackenzi Furlong scored a goal and was posted a pair of assists in the win for Mount St. Mary's, which improved to 5-4 overall and 1-0 in league play with the victory. For Canisius, junior Maggie Tifft and freshman Katie Adams each recorded a hat trick in the losing effort for the Golden Griffins (3-6, 0-1 MAAC) while junior Meg Hiltz and sophomore Maddie Fitzgerald both had multi-point days with a goal and an assist.

With Canisius in the lead 9-8, Salerno's second goal of the game, and her first in the game's final quarter, knotted the contest at 9-9 with 9:57 left to play. Canisius regained the lead 2:41 later after senior Hailey Rooney scored off an assist from Hiltz. The Blue and Gold held that lead, however, for just 2:01, as Salerno scored unassisted at the 6:15 mark of the fourth quarter to knot the game at 10-10.

Mount St. Mary's won the ensuing draw control, but the Mountaineers turned the ball over to the Griffs with 4:16 remaining. Canisius got a shot with 1:56 remaining on the clock, but Mount goalie Camille Thomas came up with the save, one of her five stops in the game's final two quarters of play. The Griffs were charged with a penalty with 1:28 left to play, setting the stage for Salerno's game-winning goal, a play-up marker, with just 18 seconds left on the clock.

Hiltz scored two of the Griffs' three goals in the opening quarter, and Adams scored twice in the second quarter to send the Blue and Gold into the locker room up 6-4 at the break. Out of intermission, Tifft's goal off an assist from sophomore Megan Previdi put the home team up 7-5 with 11:36 left to play in the third stanza. The Mount scored the game's next two goals to knot the score at 7-7, but Hiltz's goal with eight seconds left in the third, her 11th goal of the season, put Canisius up 8-7 after three quarters of play.

Thomas made seven saves in net for the Mountaineers, as the Griffs ended the contest with a 17-14 advantage in shots on goal. Canisius goaltender Olivia Licardi made three stops on the day.
