Women's Lacrosse Drops Season Opener at #2 Northwestern

Northwestern's Madison Taylor scored a game-high five goals to lead the No. 2 Wildcats to a 23-3 win over Canisius in NCAA women's lacrosse action Sunday afternoon at Ryan Fieldhouse in Evanston, Ill.

With the win, the Wildcats improved to 2-0 on the season, while the Golden Griffins dropped to 0-1 in their initial game of the season.

Northwestern started the first quarter with three quick scores before sophomore Maddie Fitzgerald netted her first goal of the season to cut the Wildcats' edge to 3-1. Northwestern then recorded seven consecutive scores to end the opening frame 10-1.

In the second quarter, Northwestern tacked on four more goals to take a 14-1 lead. With 3:02 remaining before halftime, sophomore Ashlyn Dhandwar found the back of the net to make the score 14-2 in favor of Northwestern heading into the intermission.

Canisius opened the second half's scoring after senior Hailey Rooney ripped one home just 1:06 into the third quarter to make the score 14-3. Just over a minute later, Northwestern answered Canisius' early marker, using a 9-0 run to seal the victory for the home team.

GAME NOTES
Sunday's game served as the fourth all-time meeting between the programs. Northwestern has won all four of those games.
• The second-ranked Wildcats are the highest nationally-ranked team that Canisius has played since the 2017 season when the Griffs took on No.2 North Carolina.
• The last time Canisius allowed 20-or-more goals in a game was Mar. 16, 2022, in a 20-15 loss to UAlbany.
• Fitzgerald and Dhandwar each found the net in the season-opener for the second-straight season. Both sophomores recorded a goal in last year's season-opening victory over George Washington.
• Sunday's road game marks the first of six-straight contests to start the year for the Blue and Gold. The Griffs host their home opener against Robert Morris on Mar. 8.

UP NEXT
Canisius will continue a six-game road swing against St. Bonaventure on Wednesday afternoon. Opening draw is set for 3 p.m. at Tom and Michelle Marra Field in Olean, N.Y.
